Hitler was never depicted on coins. Instead, the obverse features Reich President Paul von Hindenburg. Hindenburg was a general during World War I and the victorious commander at the battles of Tannenberg and the Masurian Lakes, making him immensely popular among the German people. Despite being 84 years old, he sought re-election as Reich President solely to prevent Hitler from seizing power. However, in 1933, he was forced to appoint Adolf Hitler as Chancellor. Hindenburg passed away in 1934, after which Hitler assumed the presidency and granted himself dictatorial powers. Hitler admired Hindenburg greatly, but the feeling was not mutual.

The reverse of the coin features the German eagle perched on an emblem with a swastika. The German eagle is one of the oldest state symbols in Europe, tracing its roots back to the Germanic tribes, who used the eagle as a symbol of the god Odin.

The 2-Reichsmark coin from 1936-1939 has a diameter of 25 mm, weighs 8 grams, and is struck in 62.5% silver.
